"In this composition Sant Tukaram Maharaj says, the contemplation of GOD excels the desire to meet Him. No less than GOD is the man, absorbed in the contemplative prayer, whose longing perpetuates amidst the ceaseless contemplation.

"In this composition Sant Tukaram Maharaj illustrates his Longing for GOD with beautiful allegories.

My state of mind he says has become like a baby who delights most by seeing its mother.

Elucidating with a metaphor of deep yearning he says, a Chatak Bird, a Pied Cuckoo, drinks water from no other source but the rain water only when it pours in a particular lunar constellation 'Swati'.

Chakrawak Birds fly in pairs during the day but are doomed for ever to separation during night. And therefore he says, his longing for GOD is like that of Chakrawak Birds who look for the Sun Light eagerly to meet again after the night of separation.

He says, my yearning for You O' GOD is like water is to fish or longing of a cow separated from her calf. 

He says, it is like a longing of a faithful wife for the moment when she can be together again with her husband or just like the mind of the miser who starves amidst his store, broods on his wealth, griping still for more.

Summing up Sant Tukaram Maharaj says, less You O'GOD, my life will be, but less vitality."

"In this composition Sant Tukaram Maharaj says, the Bliss of Supreme Contentment has descended upon me since Your Feet became fully manifest within, and therefore now I do not wish to do anything but meditate on them all the time, Blessed I am he says,to have this fountanhead of perpetual happiness, for it is truly the harbinger of ultimate Liberation.

He says, after long and ceaseless wanderings through countless lifetimes, at last I am on the verge of becoming free from the Karmic Debt, the reason to be born again and again."

"In this composition Sant Tukaram Maharaj describes his state of becoming One with GOD Consciousness.He says, the True Giver, Enjoyer and the food itself is GOD Narayan, for He is the one who eats and also the one who feeds. And therefore no way it can be said that "I earned something and  enjoyed it, for the duality has transcended and the Supreme Oneness unfolds here, there, and everywhere, within this, that and everything.

उभयतां लोभी मन II

बहिरे मुके एके ठायी I

तैसे झाले तया दोही II

माप आणि गोणी I

तुका म्हणे रिती दोन्ही II


"In this composition Sant Tukaram Maharaj says, when the discourse by the orator is intentional, the listener feels the fear that the orator may expect something from him in return. The orator may not believe in what he is talking about but he presents it for a reward. This materialistic attitude of the orator he says is catlike who roams around place to place for nothing but food.

He says, vainly is the spiritual discourse when the orator and the listener do it for some material expectation. Such alliance he says is as futile as the interaction between a deaf and a mute.

Illustrating with beautiful analogy Sant Tukaram Maharaj says, this fruitless interaction is like that of a measuring jug and the sack of grain, for both remain empty after the measuring jug removes the grain from the sack."

"In this composition Sant Tukaram Maharaj says, nothing is fixed or settled, everything is a constant movement and evolution and our mind is no exception, for the mind by its nature is in a constant state of flux. No thought, no feeling, no sensation lasts for more than an instant before it is transformed into the next thought, next sensation. And therefore he calls upon GOD to take hold of the reins of his mind horse galloping wildly.

He says, no matter how much I try, i am unable to resist the temptation of mind to chase the sense pleasures, and therefore I look upon You O'GOD as my last resort, for  Your Grace never disappoints those who look upon You as their only hope."

"In this composition Sant Tukaram Maharaj says, walking the correct path leads One to his destination. He  might have heard a lot about a particular journey, but only when he experiences it, he knows.

He says, just like the labor pains are unintelligible to an unmarried girl, the True Longing is a journey that must be lived to be experienced.

Summing up Sant Tukaram Maharaj says, just like the sun shines only when the dark clouds shrouding it disperse, the journey becomes the destination only when the Longing is fired by the eagerness."

"In this composition Sant Tukaram Maharaj says, perpetual happiness descended upon me O'GOD with Your Realisation and the fearlessness dawned on me, for the True Happiness is devoid of fear. 

He says, the absolute surrender is the quintessence of the true devotion, for all the virtues are manifested in the One who has surrendered himself to GOD and all his vices vanish. The Truly Surrendered prays and let GOD worry.

And therefore O'GOD says Sant Tukaram Maharaj, I do not let a moment of this rare human birth pass without Your Name Worship, for it is the true panacea of the repeated sufferings."

He says, just like a lingering taste of the delicious food tasted in the past tempts One to taste it again and again or just like the longing to meet a loved one never wanes, so is my yearning for 'Hari Naam', for no matter how many times I repeat it, the tongue tires not.

Summing up Sant Tukaram Maharaj says, GOD Vithoba standing hands akimbo on a brick is but my longing of the Unmanifest personified."

"In this composition Sant Tukaram Maharaj says, talking about Renouncing the attachment to sense pleasures is easy but living it is a different ball game, for in the end, its not the talk but the walk that matters.

He says, if One proclaims abandonment of pursuit of material comforts in the interest of achieving spiritual enlightenment then it sounds untrue because the Renunciation is easier said than done.

He says, Truly Blessed is the One who endures pain and hardships of Renunciation stoically, for the True Renunciation is no less than taking a morsel of poison slowly.

Summing up Sant Tukaram Maharaj says, most revered is the One who lives Renunciation with courage of conviction, for only then the metal is ready for the Maker's Hand."

"In this composition Sant Tukaram Maharaj says, the root cause of the repeated sufferings is the illusion of ' Me', 'Mine', and 'I am this body' idea. Assuming the 'Bodily Me' as the true reality is like the delusion of the ignorant mind to see water pools in the mirage.And therefore he earnestly implores GOD Panduraga to save him from this impending catastrophe.

He says, we are like a traveller illusioned by a mirage. In ignorance we accept the mirage like appearance of the 'Me' and 'Mine' as the reality while the Truth which we reject lies within us. 

Summing up Sant Tukaram Maharaj says, 'I am this body' idea is but the false association of the Soul with the physical elements. It does not exist any more than the water exists in the mirage. It only exists in our imperfect vision through the lens of ignorance or assuming ' That Which Is Not'."

"In this composition Sant Tukaram Maharaj says, truly blessed are those who make every moment of their rare human birth worthwhile for its true purpose, the GOD Realisation.

He says, the soul can be born as any of the 8.4 million species, one of which is the precious human form, for only here the soul's consciousness has access to the most supreme form of pleasure - the Love of GOD. It is only in this rare human birth that One can consciously overcome the longing to material wealth and lust, the root cause of all the sufferings.

He says, the True Renunciation is not the selective renouncing of things or going to pilgrimages but consciously abandoning the psychological construct called the false ego sense.

Summing up Sant Tukaram Maharaj says, he is a humble servant of those who lay aside the budens of 'Me', 'Mine' and 'I am this body idea', for the Wise knows that they are not even his to carry."

He says, a glance at Him not only frees One from the sins of his past but also ensures that he becomes free from the otherwise endless cycle of deaths and rebirths.

"In this composition Sant Tukaram Maharaj says, the entreaties by the Self Knowledge which comes searching for the devotees of GOD Vishnu are turned down by them, for they find it bereft of the sweetness. The more they push it away, the more it tries to intrude into their lives.

Summing up Sant Tukaram Maharaj says, the knowledge of the True Self which is unattainable even with myriad of efforts comes looking only for the Truely Desireless."

"In this composition Sant Tukaram Maharaj says, just like a glittering flint stone is far from a diamond, no pretension is forever, for everyone's true colours will show eventually.

He says, it's high time to look beyond the falsehood of 'Me', 'Mine', for GOD throbs in His Creation.

"In this composition Sant Tukaram Maharaj says, the futile talk enervates but not the Name Worship of GOD, for a loud mind is greater than a loud mouth.

He says, the Name of GOD ever in the tongue of thought bestows the happiness unparalleled.

He, says, when  nothing but the Name of GOD is upon the tongue, it is like,the Divine Nectar raring to spill from within into the folds of mind.

"In this composition Sant Tukaram Maharaj says, it is the intense longing of the devotee that makes the Mighty GOD dwell in the confines of heart and He becomes what his devotee sees Him as, fulfilling his wishes.

He says, the All Powerful Giver of Life wants but a basil leaf and water from his devotee.

Sant Tukaram Maharaj says, assuming the Name and Form, the Unmanifest became reachable."

विटे चरण सम नीट II

ते म्यां हृदयी धरिले I

तापशमन पाऊले II

सकळ तीर्था अधिष्ठान I

करी लक्ष्मी संवाहन II

तुका म्हणे अंती I

ठाव मागितला संती II


"In this composition Sant Tukaram Maharaj says, the Wise are propounding since time immemorial that our True Abode is the Feet of GOD Vithoba, the sublime essence of myriad of pilgrimages, which the Goddess Lakshmi treasures.

The unmoored ship of my aimless wanderings have at last found a sheet anchor in them he says, and therefore I have now come to abide in my mind the Holy Feet and meditate on them all the time, for it is the true annihilation of all troubles born of ignorance."

मृत्यूलोकी आम्हां आवडती परि I

नाही एका हरिनामाविण II

विटले हे चित्त प्रपंचापासूनि I

वमन ते मनी बैसलेसे II

सोने रूपे आम्हां मृत्तिकेसमान I

माणिके पाषाण खडे तैसे I

तुका म्हणे तैशा दिसतील नारी I

रिसचियापरि आम्हांपुढे II


"In this composition Sant Tukaram Maharaj says, on Earth, the land of mortals, where every one who takes birth must die, nothing pleases me more than 'Hari Naam'.

He says, sick of the mundane existence where we end up missing most of it, is like a sick to him.

He says, the glitter of gold and silver no more allures and precious jewels are no more than mere stones.

Sant Tukaram Maharaj says, the women who hold people spellbound appear to him as but 'sows' or female bear."

जेणे पीडा वारेल II

पथ्य नाम विठोबाचे I

आणीक वाचे न सेवी II

भवरोगा ऐसे जाय I

आणीके काय क्षुल्लके II

तुका म्हणे नव्हे बाधा I

आणीक कदा भुतांची II


"In this composition Sant Tukaram Maharaj says, the Name Worship of GOD Vithoba is the Divine potion for immortality. 

Let the tongue utter nothing but GOD Name Vithoba, for when One is in possession of the panacea of all ills, the dis-ease cease to exist.

Sant Tukaram Maharaj says, evil spirits can do no harm to the One who is fondly absorbed in the Name Worship of GOD, for their spell goes haywire against His Magic"

विषयी विसर पडिला निःशेष I

अंगी ब्रम्हरस ठसावला II

माझी मज झाली अनावर वाचा I

छंद या नामाचा घेतलासे II

लाभचिया सोसे पुढे चाले मन I

धनाचा कृपण लोभी जैसा II

तुका म्हणे गंगा सागरसंगमी I

अवघ्या झाल्या उर्मी एकमय II


"In this composition Sant Tukaram Maharaj says, the outpouring from within of 'Hari Naam' has now crossed the realm of my conscious thought so much so that the Name Worship of GOD is now happening instead of I am doing it.

He says, his ceaseless longing of repeating 'Hari Naam' is just like a miser whose mind constantly dwells on avarice and has an insatiable greed for riches.

Sant Tukaram Maharaj says, just like river Ganga ultimately merges into ocean to become One with it, the ripples of attachment no more surface on my mind ocean, for my mind has become attuned to GOD's presence and His calling."
