"It is said that "Faith is not clinging to the shrine but an endless Pilgrimage of the heart"
In this composition Sant Tukaram Maharaj talks about the paramount importance of a Conscious Cleansing of our Subconscious Mind, for One needs to go to no Pilgrimages, but needs to go on journey within to understand the Truth of our True Self. He says, Pilgrimages are meant for Spiritual Cleansing and not for mere ablution.Taking dip in the waters at the Pilgrimages, One can at the most clean this bodily apparel, but the real cleansing from within needs a conscious effort to practice virtues, detachment, renunciation which help to cultivate purity, ultimately to become One with the Supreme Self, for bodies are cleansed by water while the mind is purified by Truth.
Illustrating with beautiful analogy Sant Tukaram Maharaj says, Bitter Gourd (कारले) is bitter to the core. It's bitterness does not diminish even if it swims in sugar. Similarly even if One makes a big talk on his spiritual ventures, it hardly makes any impact till his "I -ness" remains dominant. In another analogy he says, One may get a public praise for visiting Pilgrimages but its real purpose will be lost if the visit to Pilgrimage becomes a ritualistic formality.
Summing up Sant Tukaram Maharaj says, we, the mortal beings, are the Pilgrims, in this rare human life, on the spiritual journey to Liberation.The path to Self Realisation will unfold only when One walks on it with compassion, forgiveness and peace from within. He says, it is believed that the Pilgrimage is about going away, but it isn't. It is about coming home.Those who chose to go on Pilgrimage have already ventured away from themselves, and now set out in longing to journey back to who they are."
