"According to Hindu Mythology, Supreme Lord Vishnu dropped drops of Amrit, the nectar of immortality at four places while carrying it in Kumbh, a pot. Nashik, on the banks of river Godavari being one of these four Sacred places holds a fair, Kumbh Mela while the planet is in Leo Zodiac sign by Hindu astrology.
It is believed that bathing in the Godavari River at this festival destroys all the sins and the human beings are liberated from endless cycle of deaths and rebirths. In this composition Sant Tukaram Maharaj says that (सिंहस्थ कुंभ मेळा) being largest congregation of pilgrims gives the temple priests and the barbers in the vicinity to earn money in short time. It is said that " To make a fine gentleman, several trades are required, but chiefly a barber." The barbering is nothing but a constant vigilance of the Self thereby avoiding the misconduct which may prove to be detrimental going ahead. The barber in the pilgrimage may earn a lot of money despite being unaware of himself being in the Razor's Edge carrying burden of loads of sin.
Addressing the barber Sant Tukaram Maharaj urges him to look within and introspect whether trimming and cutting hair of his clients made his own vices wane significantly, for this holds the key to make this rarest of rare human births, a fruitful endeavor. If not, then all goes in vain because cutting and trimming the mortal sins is paramount for One to walk on the path to Self Realisation.
Sant Tukaram Maharaj says that more than mere act of barbering, a dialogue with the Self is crucial for eradicating the vices which leech our Self and hence become a major hurdle on our journey to Self Realisation.
Summing up Sant Tukaram Maharaj says that Sacred Pilgrimage like (सिंहस्थ कुंभ मेळा) is merely a reminder of the gargantuan task of Self Purification which need to be done in this fleeting human existence but it is not the end in itself. A conscious effort to look within and doing everything possible to minimise our shortcomings is the real objective to make this rare human birth successful. Only the reason-less and loving devotion of Divine Lord through incessant recital of Holy Ram Nam, is a slow but steady way to Self Realisation, the Abode of Supreme Bliss."
