" The concept of ' सहज ' is pivotal to the mystical thought. It relates to the highest spiritual state attainable and has deepest connotations attached to it. It is the acceptance of inwardness, negating all ritualistic formalities. Just as vegetables cooked over a slow fire retain their flavour, so is the gradual and voluntary discipline of the mind and the body will bring out the goodness inherent in the Self. All true balance and true actions engender (give rise to) aesthetic as well as spiritual pleasure while spiritual fulfilment gives infinite bliss. In this composition Sant Tukaram Maharaj talks about this simple and spontaneous state of being of the One who has attained Self Realisation. He says,
The Self Realised soul leads a life of detachment and dispassion. He lives in the world like the lotus to which mire(swampy, muddy ground) does not adhere, but from which it gets its nourishment. Pleasures and pains pass like ripples over the surface while the mighty deep underneath remains unruffled. Peace being hallmark of this state, all running about and all feverish pursuits cease. ' सहज ' being state of freedom, it betokens (indicates) freedom from desire, from conflict and from illusion.Though One is liberated from cramping influence of social compulsions, he does not become a fugitive from social responsibility.
Summing up Sant Tukaram Maharaj says that ' सहज ' spells awareness of the great vital harmony within as One gets attuned to the inner rhythm of being. It is a creative joy of highest order, not ephemeral like enjoyment from sense objects, but it is an abiding state of undiminishing bliss.
' सहज ' signifies a transcendent state, one beyond the habitual levels of consciousness and beyond the duality of this worldly illusion. "
