" In this composition, Sant Tukaram Maharaj compares the world appearance to a mirage which appears to be real to a deluded mind. It is Mirage of Maya, the illusion, " That which is not "
Elucidating with beautiful analogies he says,
The age old analogy of the snake and rope reveals both the wonder and absurdity of this trick of Maya. The piece of rope lying on the path tricks to be a snake. Such is the mystical nature of Maya. When it is truly seen, it is nothing, only an absurd illusion with no substance. But when it is not seen, it becomes the impregnable power of imagination spinning out a totally unbelievable nightmare that holds the man in its grip. It is the ego that gives a coiled rope an appearance of a snake. Ignorance about the true nature of world causes suffering. Sant Tukaram Maharaj says that mistaking rope for a snake is like crying in pain without any infliction.
Unless One remedies his sufferings by reflective thought, all goes in vain. Hence conscious effort is much needed to elude the trap of ignorance. In another analogy Sant Tukaram Maharaj says that a parrot perches on a tubular trap of hunter, assuming it as a branch of tree. It's unawareness of danger is similar to man engrossed in body centric vision of the world entire. He is totally unaware of the absolute truth that," what seems is not. "
Sant Tukaram Maharaj says that the veil of ignorance makes one feel as if he is bounded by this worldly existence. But in the true sense his true Self is a free bird as always and forever.
He says that if zero is erased from number 10 then only digit 1 remains. This zero signifies the sum total of all sins and virtues one accumulates in his lifetime. In a way when this zero which is influenced by bandage of senses is erased, what remains is 1 which is but the absolute and eternal truth , the free and immortal soul which envelopes the world entire as Supreme Consciousness.
He says that the veil of ignorance blocks the vision so much so that One loses the thread of Self which connects it to Supreme Self.
And hence Sant Tukaram Maharaj urges One earnestly to introspect carefully .He says, it is the outlook of a person that decides the end result. A gazelle is tempted by a mirage which seems to be having appearance of sheet of water. As soon as there is a realisation of the truth, the gazelle suffers an immense agony and sorrow.
Summing up Sant Tukaram Maharaj says that One must be beware of the mirage of world of senses, delving deep into them will bring nothing but only sorrow and pain. "
