"This composition of Sant Tukaram Maharaj is about the ignorance of the true purpose of this rare human birth by which we are being constantly swayed by countless attachments, myriads of aspirations and desires springing from longings of heart. He says, this ignorance is a serious malady with which we are afflicted and it is the cause of bondage.
Sant Tukaram Maharaj says, we usually lament the death of others but are not sagacious enough to care for our own end which is inevitable. Neither Kings nor beggars remain, for all go, each one in his time. He says, we may be very clever in the worldly affairs, but strange as it may seem, we know nothing of what awaits us all, and we have to go like all others, all alone and empty handed. The inevitable fate of all is, weeping we come into the world, and weeping we depart from the world.
Sant Tukaram Maharaj says, the material possessions One accumulates do not come to his rescue at the time of death, for One finds no comfort in even a soft bed when his body withers with old age.
Sant Tukaram Maharaj says, One spends his life accumulating the riches, but he himself cannot enjoy them forever as death robs him of that privilege. The riches then pass to his relatives. Sant Tukaram Maharaj says, this is just like a ripe crop being ravished by stray birds.
Summing up Sant Tukaram Maharaj implores us to awaken from the deep slumber of ignorance of the true purpose of this rare human birth, for unless the senses are subdued and the mind is stilled in a state of equipoise, One cannot witness the glory of GOD."
